The dam

Fourteen kilometres of quiet water in the heart of Zululand.

Phobane Dam, still known to many as the Goedertrouw Dam, sits in the Umhlatuze valley below the Mabelebele mountains. It is the second-largest lake in KwaZulu-Natal, and the southern shore is a community conservation area where kingfishers, ospreys, giraffe and kudu are regular sightings.
